These tapes, called in our area Gypsy tapes, were made as a warp-faced fabric, where the warp threads completely cover the weft thread. They served as a functional or decorative hems, laces, shoulder straps, belts, or just as surprisingly durable and strong tie strings.
The weaving principle is the same as on any rigid-heddle loom.
There are alternating slits and holes in the wooden tool and after threading thin yarns into these you get a simple warp.
Both ends of yarns are to be tied (for example one onto your belt and on onto a chair), so that the warp is tensioned.
By moving the heddle up and down the yarns change their position and you thread the weft yarn in between.
The length and colours are up to you, of course! :-)
The heddle is made locally, by our crafty woodmaker friends in Modra.
